Canucks lose Game 5, still lead series 3-2

April 20, 2007

canucks_game5.jpg

Well, the Canucks had a chance to put the series away at home, but they weren’t able to pull it off. It doesn’t surprise me at all, as I didn’t expect them to win this game. However, I do think they deserved to win game 5. They out-played Dallas for most of the game, and both teams played a more offensive game, which lead to a more entertaining game.

With the game being tied 0-0 going into overtime, you’d think the game would have been boring as hell. But it wasn’t. It was a pretty entertaining game, with lots of back and forth action, with both goalies making some pretty great saves.

I really thought the Canucks were going to come through, but an unfortunate “two many men” penalty in overtime was their undoing. Dallas seemed to be playing with the lead, and trying to play a more shut down game in the third. Quite the odd strategy, considering this was a “must-win” game for them. In fact, it seemed both teams were playing as if they had the lead for the second half of the third period.

Some notes:

- I thought Taylor Pyatt played one of his better games of the year. He was hitting, playing more aggressive and had a few scoring chances. His line, along with Brian Smolinski and Trevor Linden had another strong game.

- The Sedins looked a lot better tonight as well, as they were able to get a few scoring chances.

- Naslund was invisible. Again. I honestly can’t think of a single moment when he did anything, good or bad.

- The goaltenders were once again the stars of the game. Turco had his second shutout of the series, and hopefully people will stop calling him a “choke” in the playoffs. He is the only reason Dallas is still in this series. Luongo was once again amazing, and I thought he had an even better game than Turco did. It’s unfortunate both goalies couldn’t get the shutout.

- Mattias Ohlund had a really good game. He has made a few mistakes during these playoffs, but he is one of the guys that does so much for this team, and doesn’t always get credit for it. He plays almost entirely against the other team’s top lines, and is incredible in his shut down abilities. Same goes for Willie Mitchell.

I will almost guarantee the Canucks will win Game 6 in Dallas. They are great on the road, and usually play a more relaxed game without the home crowd watching in. Hopefully they can take the series in Dallas on Saturday, as I don’t think my nerves can handle a Game 7 at this point.

Game 6 prediction: 2-1, Vancouver.

Too soon to joke? Umm… YA THINK?!?

April 20, 2007

From CBSNews:

The mother of a kindergartner was charged with assault Thursday and banned from school after officials said she walked into the child’s classroom, pointed a toy cap gun at students and pulled the trigger several times.

It happened Tuesday, a day after the deadly shootings at Virginia Tech, and scared teachers and students, the school principal said.

[...]

“A staff member and several children initially thought the gun was real and were fearful,” police chief Mark Johnson said in a press release.

School officials said the woman was in the classroom to pay for an upcoming field trip. While the teacher’s back was turned, “The mom walked in toward the middle of the classroom, and the teacher heard this click, click, click, click _ like four to six times,” Principal Jean Heise said.

Wow. Umm… she either has a really bad sense of humor and/or reality, or she’s completely nuts. Either way, I feel bad for the poor kid that has to be raised by this woman.

Drunk gas pumping is apparantly a bad idea

April 19, 2007

drunkgaspumper.jpg

From: stuff.co.nz:

A two-year-old who was left in the back seat of a car when her drunk father fell asleep while refueling the vehicle called out “Bye, Daddy” after he was jailed for 18 months today.

At Waitakere District Court today Shannon Perenara, a 30-year-old Auckland labourer, was sentenced to 18 months in jail and disqualified from driving for three years, effective from today.

He was denied leave to apply for home detention.

The incident happened around 9am on March 24 when officers were called by a concerned Rotorua service station attendant who found Mr Perenara slumped at the petrol pump. Officers had to wait 40 minutes for him to wake up before he could be breath-tested.

You know you’re a piece of crap when you pass out while pumping gas into your car, with your two year old daughter sitting in the back seat, at freakin’ 9:00am in the morning. Wow, how did this guy only get 18 months in prison?

My Top 10 Favorite Actresses

April 19, 2007

Creating a list of my Top 10 Favorites Actresses was just as hard as my Top 10 List of Actors. But for different reasons. I had a list of about 30 actors that I really like that I had to narrow down to ten. I don’t have nearly as many favorite actresses, but I was still able to put together a list, and realized there are a lot more good actresses out there than you’d think.

Also, I wanted to point out that this list is based on how much I enjoy their work and the films they have done, and it’s not a list based on how hot I may think they are (although I’m sure that has some influence whether I want it to or not, haha).

Anyways, on to the list…

jessica-alba.jpg10 (tie). Jessica Alba

Why I like her: Dark Angel (TV show), Honey, Sin City, Fantastic Four, Into the Blue

I’ve liked Jessica Alba since she got her first big break starring in the TV show, “Dark Angel”. Since then she has made some entertaining films, but other than Sin City, hasn’t really made anything of substance. I enjoyed her appearances in Entourage as well. She does have some potentially good films coming out over the next year, such as Awake, Fantastic Four 2 and Sin City 2.

rachel_mcadams.jpg10 (tie). Rachel McAdams

Why I like her: Mean Girls, The Notebook, Wedding Crashers, The Family Stone

Although she hasn’t been in a lot, Rachel McAdams has still managed to impress me quite a bit. She has proven she has the range to do several types of roles. She can do the sappy romance (The Notebook), the mean but hilarious (Mean Girls), the nice girl (Wedding Crashers) and drama (The Family Stone). I look forward to what she does in the future, as I think she could be one of the upcoming star female actresses.

sandrabullock.jpg9. Sandra Bullock

Why I like her: Speed, A Time To Kill, 28 Days, The Lake House, Crash

Sandra Bullock was probably the first actress I called a “favorite”, and she was also my first celebrity crush. She’s been in a lot of enjoyable movies over the years, but unfortunately most were of the “fluff” variety. My favorite of all her films, was her work in “Crash”. She was incredible, and I just wish she would do more dark serious films. I’d love to see what a director like Quentin Tarantino could do with her.

uma_thurman.jpg8. Uma Thurman

Why I like her: Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2

Uma Thurman has starred in 3 of my favorite films, so she’s a must to make this list. However, she’s unfortunately been in a lot of duds as well, (My Super Ex-Girlfriend, The Avengers, Batman & Robin), so it seems without Tarantino, it’s rare she appeals to me. Still, she’s done great work in his films, so she’s on the list.

jolie-angelina.jpg7. Angelina Jolie

Why I like her: Gia, Girl Interrupted, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Angelina has been in such huge hits, but also a few duds. None-the-less, she is still a great actress, and I think with all the media press she gets, her acting talents are often forgotten. She has been in everything from action (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Tomb Raider) to drama (Gia) to comedy (Life or Something Like It).

natalieportman.jpg6. Natalie Portman

Why I like her: Leon: The Professional, Star Wars I, II & III, Garden State, Closer, V For Vendetta

I’ve liked Natalie Portman since the first time I saw her in Leon. She has continued to put out both great (Garden State, Closer) and commercially successful (Star Wars Trilogy) films. I was surprised by how good V For Vendetta was, as well. She has good range, although I prefer her in the quirky odd role, especially her role as Sam in Garden State. She is one of the most talented young actresses out there, and I expect her to be around for a long time.

evanrachelwood.jpg5. Evan Rachel Wood

Why I like her: Thirteen, Pretty Persuasion, Down In The Valley

Although she hasn’t been in a ton of films, what she has done has completely blown me away. She is an extremely talented girl. The fact that she has put out such incredible performances in the three films I listed above- and she’s only 19 years old- is quite the accomplishment. She may be a little odd (she’s dating 38 year old Marilyn Manson), she still no doubt deserves a spot on my list.

jennifer_garner.jpg4. Jennifer Garner

Why I like her: Alias, Daredevil, 13 Going On 30

Jennifer Garner is on this list for basically one reason; Alias. I was a huge fan of Alias, and Jennifer Garner was one of the main reasons why. I think she’s a great actress, and one of the few females out there who can pull off action the way she does. She is also pretty funny, as we’ve seen in 13 Going On 30. I’m really looking forward to her upcoming film, “The Kingdom”. It looks excellent.

naomi-watts.jpg3. Naomi Watts

Why I like her: The Ring, 21 Grams, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, King Kong

Although she is incredibly beautiful, Naomi Watts “made it” in acting when she was older than when most attractive women make it in acting. She’s turning 39 this year, and didn’t really hit it big until her role in The Ring in 2002. The main reasons she is on this list, is for her amazing work in 21 Grams, and to a lesser degree, We Don’t Live Here Anymore. Both are incredible films, and Watts’ work is a big reason why.

charlize-theron.jpg2. Charlize Theron

Why I like her: Monster, North Country, The Devil’s Advocate, Cider House Rules, Trapped, Italian Job

Charlize Theron has made a transition that rarely happens. She went from hugely successful model to Academy Award winning actress. Her work in North Country and Monster, are in my opinion, two of the best female performances I have ever seen. She is quite possibly the best actress on the planet right now. She has at least seven films coming out over the next two years, and I am sure I will see all of them.

scarlett_johansson.jpg1. Scarlett Johansson

Why I like her: Lost in Translation, Ghost World, In Good Company, The Island, The Prestige

Anyone that knows me could have guessed who my number one on this list would be. Ever since Lost in Translation I have been practically obsessed with Scarlett Johansson. However, not only do I think she’s the most beautiful actress alive, she is also one of the most talented. She has been around for a long time, having been in films since she was a child. She often chooses artsy roles over blockbusters, and although that’s commendable in a way, I would still like to see her do a few more “popcorn” films (such as The Island).

Honorable mention: Edie Falco, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Bilson, Tricia Helfer, Julianne Moore and Renee Zellweger.

8:00 pm – Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11:00 pm – Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

catsniper.jpgExcerpts from a Cat’s Daily Diary:

Day 683 of my captivity:

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the floor.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. The audacity!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow– but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released — and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded!

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe…for now…

The Ethnic Face Transformer

April 18, 2007

Ever wondered what you would look like if you were a different race? Or as an old person? Or as an ape? Well, now you can find out.

Using St. Andrew’s Face Transformer, I simply uploaded a picture of myself, and followed a couple steps, and was then able to find out what I’d look like as a baby, a child, Asian, an Ape, Drunk, as a Manga Cartoon and more. It’s pretty hilarious what comes out. Look below to see what I came up with.

I started with this picture:

Canucks win Game 4, Stars face elimination

April 18, 2007

game4win.jpgWell, the Canucks are going home with a chance at eliminating the Dallas Stars. As much of a Canuck fan as I am, and even though I predicted the Canucks to win this series, I never expected this.

Last night’s game was the first of the series that the ‘Nucks actually deserved to win. They outplayed Dallas for most of the game, and really turned it on in the last 10 minutes. It was an impressive win.

Some points from the game:

- Luongo was incredible, as usual. However, the Canucks have done a great job in front of him, and have given him the chance to make a lot of the saves he’s made.

- Jeff Cowan hasn’t been doing much lately. He took a bad penalty, and didn’t seem to get much ice time after that. He had a hit or two, but didn’t provide the energy game that he did in Game 1.

- I barely noticed Jannick Hansen at all last night. His linemate Jan Bulis had a great game, though. I was huge Bulis-hater earlier in the year, but he has really impressed me lately. So much so, that I wouldn’t mind the Canucks re-signing him for next season. A month ago, I would have never even considered it as an option. Bulis is skating hard, getting into a good offensive position a lot, and doing a good job controlling the puck in the neutral zone.

- Trevor Linden had an incredible shift that ended up creating the Canucks game-winning goal. He back-checked hard in the offensive zone, and ended up getting the puck back in a play that looked like it was over. He battled hard, got the puck, and ended up with the goal. Linden looked like the ’94 Superstar that he used to be.

- Willie Mitchell single-handedly saved the game with his diving play to wack the puck out of the net, just as it was about to cross the goal-line. What a play!

- Markus Naslund is completely useless. He had maybe one good shift, but also had a brutal giveaway which caused the Stars’ goal. How he continues to get so much ice time just baffles me. And what the hell was he doing on the ice in the last minute of the game? Are you kidding me?

- The Sedins had a better game, and it looks like they’re figuring out how to play against the good Dallas defense. This is a huge positive, as Dallas has been able to do a great job shutting the Sedins down for most of the series.

Overall, things are looking great for the Canucks. If they don’t win it at home at Thursday, I am 100% positive they will at least win the game in Dallas on Saturday.

Go Canucks Go!

Movie Review: School For Scoundrels

April 17, 2007

schoolforscoundrels_dvd.jpgSchool For Scoundrels is basically what you’d expect it to be. It’s Fight Club meets Bad Santa, but unfortunately nowhere near as good as either of those films.

I like both Jon Heder and Billy Bob Thornton. They did admiral jobs in this film, and overall I’d say I enjoyed it. It was about what I expected it to be. There are some pretty funny spots and I had a few good laugh-out-loud moments.

The film centers on Roger (Jon Heder, aka Napoleon Dynamite) and he is a hapless loser. A nice guy, but well… he’s a meter maid and good things just don’t happen to him. So he joins a class taught by Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton), that’s intention is to make geeks into studs.

I’d recommend the film if you’re looking for something easy-going to watch. It’s a film you can sit back and enjoy some popcorn to. It’s not the best comedy out there, but it does what it intends to do.

My Rating: 6.5/10

Jason’s 24th Birthday at Fest-of-Ale

April 17, 2007

This past weekend Me, Michaela and Jason headed to beautiful Penticton for a weekend of… well, a weekend of drinking. It was a surprise for Jason, as we just started driving without telling him where we were going.

We stayed at the Lakeside Hotel & Casino, and we had a great room. As you’ll see in the pictures, we had a great view from our deck, and some of the pictures turned out pretty good. Jason also brought along his Canon digital SLR, and got some pretty awesome photos.

We went to Penticton’s annual beer tasting event called “Fest-of-Ale”. This was a blast!! You pay $20 to get in, and you get a cool little glass. There were probably 20-30 different beer/cooler/cider companies there in all. You then buy tokens ($1 each), and you can go to any of the booths and get a class of beer for a token. It was a pretty sweet deal. I bought 10 tokens, and by the end of it I wasn’t what you’d call sober. Not bad for $10. There was also live music and tons of food available as well.

It was pretty cool to try out all these different types of beer that I hadn’t had before. I also had some pretty tasty ciders (which I would have to offset some of the gross beers).

We also went to the “Blue Mule” Saturday night, which was a pretty decent club. I saw a bunch of old hockey buddies there, so it ended up being a pretty good night.

Saturday afternoon, as well as Sunday, were absolutely beautiful days. We really lucked out.

The next day we came home and got to see the Canucks win Game 3 against Dallas.  All in all, a pretty awesome weekend.

I’ve uploaded a ton of pictures that both I and Jason took, and you can view them by going to my Flickr page here.

So, did Jason have a good time at his surprise birthday event? Well, he was so excited he didn’t even have time to get under the covers or get into his PJ’s. Here’s Jason at 9:00am Sunday morning:

My Top 10 Favorite Actors

April 16, 2007

So far, I think this was the hardest of all my top 10 lists. By hardest, I mean being able to narrow this list down to only 10 names. It could have easily been a Top 25 List. I compiled the list by selecting actors who have I enjoyed for a while, and who have several movies I’ve liked, with not many I haven’t liked.

So, here’s the list:

freeman.jpg10. Morgan Freeman

The Great: Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, Million Dollar Baby

The Good: Unforgiven, Outbreak, Kiss the Girls, Bruce Almighty

The Bad: I didn’t mind them, but Edison and Along Came a Spider were pretty weak.

Morgan Freeman is the kind of actor it’s so hard not to like. He usually plays such likeable characters, and his voice acting alone, in films like “March of the Penguins”, is enough to make you love the guy. I wish he had more lead roles, as he’s often more of a supporting actor. I’d really like to see him play a tortured soul type of character. I think he’d be great in a role like that.

bale.jpg9. Christian Bale

The Great: Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Machinist

The Good: Harsh Times, Reign of Fire

The Bad: None that I have seen yet.

Christian Bale is quickly climbing my list of favorite actors. His past three films (Prestige, Batman Begins and Machinist) have just blown me away.

denzel_washington_002.jpg8. Denzel Washington

The Great: Training Day, He Got Game, Inside Man, John Q

The Good: Philadelphia, Fallen, Remember the Titans, Man on Fire

The Bad: The Manchurian Candidate

Denzel Washington is great at picking top-notch roles. He is rarely in a bad movie, and I can almost guarantee I will enjoy any film he is in, which is quite an accomplishment for any actor.

pacino.jpg7. Al Pacino

The Great: Godfather’s I, II and III, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, Heat

The Good: Any Given Sunday, Carlito’s Way, The Recruit, Two for the Money, Insomnia

The Bad: His appearance in Gigli has to be considered quite the blemish on his resume.

Al Pacino is such an incredible actor, probably the best of his generation. Rarely does an actor of his ability come along, and not many other people can claim the type of superb films that he has starred in.

niccage.jpg6. Nicolas Cage

The Great: Leaving Las Vegas, Con Air, Face/Off, Weather Man, The Rock

The Good: City of Angels, 8MM, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Lord of War

The Bad: Ghost Rider, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (not a bad movie, but pretty boring).

Nicolas Cage doesn’t necessarily get the critical acclaim, although he has won a Best Actor award. He does, however, continually pump out entertaining film after entertaining film. He’s long been one of my all-time faves.

brad_pitt.jpg5. Brad Pitt

The Great: Se7en, Fight Club, Troy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

The Good: Kalifornia, Twelve Monkeys, Sleepers, A River Runs Throught It, Ocean’s 11

The Bad: Seven Years In Tibet (I found it incredibly boring)

Brad Pitt is another actor with a huge list of incredible movies, and although he does make some odd selections sometimes (Seven Years in Tibet, Meet Joe Black, Legends of the Fall), he is an actor who has such incredible range, with success in nearly every type of role possible.

wahlberg.jpg4. Mark Wahlberg

The Great: The Departed, Boogie Nights, I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings

The Good: Planet of the Apes, Rock Star, Invincible, Four Brothers, The Italian Job

The Bad: The Big Hit, The Truth About Charlie

Mark Wahlberg may be a strange choice for fourth overall on my list, considering the type of actors out there, but I have always been a huge fan of Wahlberg’s. He has been in several movies I have really, really liked, and even the ones that weren’t that great (The Big Hit), I still enjoyed. I’m really looking forward to seeing “Shooter”.

samueljackson.jpg3. Samuel L. Jackson

The Great: Pulp Fiction, 187, Jackie Brown, The Negotiator, Unbreakable

The Good: A Time To Kill, Rules of Engagement, S.W.A.T., Coach Carter

The Bad: XXX, XXX: State of the Union, The Man

Sam Jackson has been in so many of my favorite movies, he was an easy pick for this list. Although he does make some pretty stupid choices (Both XXX’s… come on Sam!), he is one of the coolest actors around, and I will always watch a movie if he’s in it.

norton.jpg2. Edward Norton

The Great: Fight Club, American History X, 25th Hour, Down In The Valley

The Good: Primal Fear, The Score, Rounders, Italian Job

The Bad: Death To Smoochy, Red Dragon. His performances were not bad at all, but the movies themselves were pretty bad.

Edward Norton is an incredibly talented actor. I’d go as far as to say he is the best actor under 40 years old in the world. Not only can he act, but his movies are entertaining as well. Often, the great actors will stick to boring films, but thankfully Norton doesn’t do this. I am greatly looking forward to watching The Illusionist and The Painted Veil, both of which I have not yet seen.

spacey.jpg1. Kevin Spacey

The Great: Usual Suspects, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, The Negotiator, American Beauty

The Good: Outbreak, Glengarry Glenross, Pay It Forward, K-Pax, Life of David Gale

The Bad: Like Morgan Freeman, Spacey also appeared in the straight-to-DVD, “Edison”.

It was a tough choice, but I am listing Kevin Spacey as my favorite actor. He has played some incredible characters and has been in two to three movies that I’d rank among my top 10. It’s his work in American Beauty and the Usual Suspects that just blew me away. Spacey has been doing a lot more stage acting lately, and I hope he returns to film again soon.

Edward Norton to star as ‘The Hulk’

April 16, 2007

edward_norton.jpgEdward Norton has signed-on to play “The Incredible Hulk”, in the remake/re-envisioning of the 2003 bomb, “Hulk”.

“The Incredible Hulk” will be directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter).

The fact that Norton has signed on says a lot about this film. Edward Norton almost always makes great acting choices, and in my opinion, he’s one of the best actors out there.

This move has got me really anticipating this film. The 2003 Ang Lee film was half-decent, but all-in-all, a huge disappointment. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with this movie, as it’s only been 4 years since the previous film was released.

“The Incredible Hulk” is currently scheduled for a 2008 release.

Thanks to john.blog for pointing this story out. You can also read Yahoo’s story, here.

Remember This… ?

April 16, 2007

variety-roll-ups.gifI remember when my Mom brought home a new treat called “Fruit Roll-Ups”. I had never had anything quite like them before. They were a lot like fruit leather, but had a much more candy taste. They came in cool colors like red, green or yellow instead of the not-so-pretty “poo” color of fruit leather.

They tasted pretty good as well, but I remember them being a pain-in-the-ass to un-wrap, and they were incredibly sticky. They seemed to take forever to chew, and you always ended up with bits and pieces of the roll-ups stuck in your teeth.

Later on, companies came up with the idea to have “punch-outs” on the fruit roll-ups. There would be little shapes or characters that you could punch-out of the sheet of roll-up. Throw a Ninja Turtle on a green fruit roll-up, and every kid wanted one.

I may be wrong on this, but fruit roll-ups eventually ushered in the invention of the much tastier “fruit snacks”.

I’m pretty sure fruit roll-ups are still around, although I haven’t had any in probably 10 years.

Some people also managed to be creative with fruit roll-ups, and along with twinkies created “Fruit Roll-up Sushi”, seen here:

Canucks win Game 3

April 16, 2007

bulis.jpgCapping off a great weekend, I got to see the Canucks win Game 3 in overtime. Game 3 was much, much better than the horribly boring Game 2, which the Canucks lost 2-0.

After 2 periods, I was starting to think it was the same team all over again. No offense, no sense of urgency… basically it just didn’t seem like they wanted to win. That, or Dallas is too good of a team. I have been impressed with Dallas’s forecheck, and defensive play. They are on you the second you have the puck, and the are great at holding up the neutral zone.

But the Canucks finally figured it out in the third period. The came out flying, and it seemed Dallas didn’t know how to react. Vancouver used their speed, and forechecked hard and put a lot of great shots toward Marty Turco. They were finally rewarded with Jan Bulis’ first goal of the playoffs. Bulis scored off a Jannick Hansen rebound.

Speaking of Hansen, wow is he ever impressing me. He has speed, grit, and  great ability at getting the puck to the net. He’s able to get 4 shots on net in each of his two games. He made some great passes, and his work in Game 3 allowed him to get his first NHL point.

The goaltending was once again the highlight of Game 3. Turco and Luongo both played great.

Before this game started, I said that whoever wins this game will win the series.  I sure hope that proves to be true.

Movie Review: Children Of Men

April 16, 2007

childrenofmen_dvd.jpgThis was one of my most anticipated movies of the year (well, of 2006 I guess). I love the plot idea of this film, and am surprised we haven’t really seen it before.

The movie takes place in 2027, and the entire world has been infertile for 18 years, with the youngest living person being 18 years old. It’s a pretty scary thought, actually. In 2027, the entire world has pretty much fallen apart, except Britain. People are flocking to Britain to try and be apart of the only surviving country.

A miracle has happened, however. A young girl has become pregnant. So, of course, she is of huge importance, and must be kept alive throughout the obstacles the characters face in the film.

Like I said, I had huge expectations going into this film. I would say they were probably, if not very closely, met. The film was very good, and although slightly different than what I expected (less action and more drama), it didn’t make the movie any less enjoyable.

Clive Owen and Michael Caine are great in this film, as well as newcomer Claire-Hope Ashitey.

The film isn’t the action-fest that the trailers imply, but it is a great film, and does have a few pretty incredible action scenes in it. But overall, it is more of a drama/thriller than an action film.

I enjoyed the movie, and would definitely recommend it.

My Rating: 8/10

The best thing to happen to ugly girls since alcohol

April 14, 2007

sunglasses.jpgI don’t have a problem with “big sunglasses”. Most attractive girls will still look good wearing them.

But I can see why so many girls are jumping on the big sunglasses wagon. I mean, if you aren’t what most people would call attractive, just throw on a pair and these, and POOF, it’s magic. Half your face is covered up, and well… half the ugly gets covered up, too.

You can walk down the street wearing these, and guys will point and go “oh, she’s wearing trendy big sunglasses, she must be hot!”

I just find it pretty funny. Make-up, wonder bra’s, hair extensions, big sunglasses… girls are doing whatever possible to cover up how they really look.

It’s really quite crazy how far women will go to look as different from their natural self as possible.

Hockey Goalies can sometimes be a little… odd

April 13, 2007

From Newsday.com:

The college hockey player who drew a misdemeanor charge in the mooning of a crowd at Eccles Ice Center pleaded not guilty to a lewdness charge.

Michael Meyer, a player for the University of Southern California, submitted a plea by facsimile machine Wednesday.

Police said Meyer rode his stick like a horse, dropped his bulky pants, mooned the crowd and slapped his buttocks during a Feb. 17 tournament game against Brigham Young University.

Atta boy… way to keep that “goalie’s are weird” reputation going.

Tom Hanks to return for “Angels & Demons”

April 12, 2007

tomhanks.jpgAccording to Cinema Blend, Tom Hanks has signed on to reprise his role as “Robert Langdon” in the Da Vinci Code prequel, “Angels & Demons”.

It’s the “biggest salary ever paid to an actor in the history of Hollywood.”, says Cinema Blend. I know Hanks wasn’t interested in returning, so the money must have been pretty jaw-dropping in order for him to sign on to the film.

I’m glad to hear they are making this second film, and especially that Hanks is returning. I thought he was the perfect choice for Robert Langdon.

I really enjoyed the books, and even though it was critically panned, I enjoyed the first film as well. Personally, I liked the “Angels & Demons” book even more than the more popular, Da Vinci Code.

Filming is expected to begin in July, which probably means we’ll see a late Summer 2008 release.
