‘The Office’ changing to hour long episodes?

May 1, 2007

office_group.jpgWow, what potentially great news this is. I absolutely LOVE “The Office”. In my mind, it’s the funniest show on television. According to Sea Babble (and thanks to John for finding this), there is a possibility that for next season, The Office will move to hour-long episodes.

I have the first two seasons on DVD, and for each episode there is often about 5-10 minutes of deleted scenes. The deleted scenes are often just as funny as anything that airs, and it really leads me to believe adding an extra 20 minutes of actual film time to each episode wouldn’t be that difficult at all. I really think they could pull it off.

24 episodes, 1 hour each? How awesome would that be?

My Top 10 Favorite Movie Characters

April 27, 2007

If you’ve read my blog before, you know I’m a huge movie buff. I’ve wanted to do this post for a while, and have finally got around to putting it together. This list is not based on which actor I like more, which performance I thought was better, or which movie was best. It’s based on my liking of the character itself.

On to the list…

tonymontana.jpg10. Tony Montana, Scarface

Favorite Quote: “You wanna f*ck with me? Okay. You wanna play rough? Okay. Say hello to my little friend!”

Such a great role, played by such a great actor (Al Pacino). Tony Montana is the immigrant turned drug kingpin. In my opinion, the best drug lord character of all time (and there has been a lot of them).

trainingday_char.jpg9. Alonzo Harris, Training Day

Favorite Quote: “They build jails ’cause of me.”

Denzel Washington has had a lot of great roles, but this one is easily my favorite. One of the most enjoyable bad-guy characters I’ve ever seen on film. He’s a bad-ass, he’s depressive, he’s cocky, but overall, he’s just such a deep and interesting character.

mrblonde.jpg8. Mr. Blonde (aka Vic Vega), Reservoir Dogs

Favorite Quote: “Are you gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are you gonna bite?”

My favorite character, in one of my favorite films. Mr. Blonde is a complete psychopath, but you can’t help but like the guy. Such a cool character.

tylerdurden.jpg7. Tyler Durden, Fight Club

Favorite Quote: “We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off”.

Tyler Durden is such an interesting character. He is a deep, but also completely empty character. You like him, you want to be him, but you also hate him and don’t trust him at the same time.

gladiator1.jpg6. Maximus, Gladiator

Favorite Quote: “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next”.

An incredible film, with several great characters, but Maximus is my favorite. He is such a powerful, honorable man. You have to respect and love a guy that goes through all he does, and has the drive and commitment that he continues to put forth over and over again.

keysersoze.jpg5. Keyser Soze, Usual Suspects

Favorite Quote: “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist”.

The fact we don’t know who Keyser Soze is until the end of the film doesn’t do anything to make him any less interesting. Keyser Soze is one of the most dangerous people on the planet, and often gets referred to as “the devil, himself”. You can’t help but watch and try to figure out just who this Keyser Soze is. It’s the main reason why Usual Suspects was such a thrilling film.

vincentvega.jpg4. Vincent Vega, Pulp Fiction

Favorite Quote: “I got a threshold, Jules. I got a threshold for the abuse that I will take. Now, right now, I’m a f*ckin’ race car, right, and you got me the red. And I’m just sayin’, I’m just sayin’ that it’s f*ckin’ dangerous to have a race car in the f*ckin’ red. That’s all. I could blow.”

One of the coolest characters of all-time, in one of the best movies of all time. So, obviously, he makes the list.

lester.jpg3. Lester Burnham, American Beauty

Favorite Quote: “Remember those posters that said, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life”? Well, that’s true of every day but one – the day you die”.

Lester Burnham is such a normal, yet completely beyond normal character. He is negative, he doesn’t really care about himself, and he has a family that can’t stand him. But you watch, and you can’t help but like the guy… or is it just that you feel bad for him? Either way, Lester is such an incredibly deep character that you can’t help but be enthralled with.

leonidas_300.jpg2. King Leonidas, 300

Favorite Quote: “Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty, for tonight we dine in hell!”

Such an awesome character, such an awesome movie. There are so many incredible scenes and so many great quotes that it’s hard to pick out a favorite. Leonidas was very close to becoming my all-time favorite character, but the guy below barely squeaked by into number 1…

juleswinnfield.jpg1. Jules Winnfield, Pulp Fiction

Favorite Quote: [Ezekiel 25:17] “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee”

In what is my favorite movie of all time, I have to list my favorite character from that film as the top choice on my list. Samuel L. Jackson is also one of my favorite actors, and this is easily my favorite role of his. Such a well written film, I could have listed 20 favorite quotes from Jules. One of the coolest, most confident bad-ass characters in movie history. Jules Winnfield ranks as my all-time favorite movie character.

My Top 10 Favorite Actresses

April 19, 2007

Creating a list of my Top 10 Favorites Actresses was just as hard as my Top 10 List of Actors. But for different reasons. I had a list of about 30 actors that I really like that I had to narrow down to ten. I don’t have nearly as many favorite actresses, but I was still able to put together a list, and realized there are a lot more good actresses out there than you’d think.

Also, I wanted to point out that this list is based on how much I enjoy their work and the films they have done, and it’s not a list based on how hot I may think they are (although I’m sure that has some influence whether I want it to or not, haha).

Anyways, on to the list…

jessica-alba.jpg10 (tie). Jessica Alba

Why I like her: Dark Angel (TV show), Honey, Sin City, Fantastic Four, Into the Blue

I’ve liked Jessica Alba since she got her first big break starring in the TV show, “Dark Angel”. Since then she has made some entertaining films, but other than Sin City, hasn’t really made anything of substance. I enjoyed her appearances in Entourage as well. She does have some potentially good films coming out over the next year, such as Awake, Fantastic Four 2 and Sin City 2.

rachel_mcadams.jpg10 (tie). Rachel McAdams

Why I like her: Mean Girls, The Notebook, Wedding Crashers, The Family Stone

Although she hasn’t been in a lot, Rachel McAdams has still managed to impress me quite a bit. She has proven she has the range to do several types of roles. She can do the sappy romance (The Notebook), the mean but hilarious (Mean Girls), the nice girl (Wedding Crashers) and drama (The Family Stone). I look forward to what she does in the future, as I think she could be one of the upcoming star female actresses.

sandrabullock.jpg9. Sandra Bullock

Why I like her: Speed, A Time To Kill, 28 Days, The Lake House, Crash

Sandra Bullock was probably the first actress I called a “favorite”, and she was also my first celebrity crush. She’s been in a lot of enjoyable movies over the years, but unfortunately most were of the “fluff” variety. My favorite of all her films, was her work in “Crash”. She was incredible, and I just wish she would do more dark serious films. I’d love to see what a director like Quentin Tarantino could do with her.

uma_thurman.jpg8. Uma Thurman

Why I like her: Pulp Fiction, Gattaca, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2

Uma Thurman has starred in 3 of my favorite films, so she’s a must to make this list. However, she’s unfortunately been in a lot of duds as well, (My Super Ex-Girlfriend, The Avengers, Batman & Robin), so it seems without Tarantino, it’s rare she appeals to me. Still, she’s done great work in his films, so she’s on the list.

jolie-angelina.jpg7. Angelina Jolie

Why I like her: Gia, Girl Interrupted, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Angelina has been in such huge hits, but also a few duds. None-the-less, she is still a great actress, and I think with all the media press she gets, her acting talents are often forgotten. She has been in everything from action (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Tomb Raider) to drama (Gia) to comedy (Life or Something Like It).

natalieportman.jpg6. Natalie Portman

Why I like her: Leon: The Professional, Star Wars I, II & III, Garden State, Closer, V For Vendetta

I’ve liked Natalie Portman since the first time I saw her in Leon. She has continued to put out both great (Garden State, Closer) and commercially successful (Star Wars Trilogy) films. I was surprised by how good V For Vendetta was, as well. She has good range, although I prefer her in the quirky odd role, especially her role as Sam in Garden State. She is one of the most talented young actresses out there, and I expect her to be around for a long time.

evanrachelwood.jpg5. Evan Rachel Wood

Why I like her: Thirteen, Pretty Persuasion, Down In The Valley

Although she hasn’t been in a ton of films, what she has done has completely blown me away. She is an extremely talented girl. The fact that she has put out such incredible performances in the three films I listed above- and she’s only 19 years old- is quite the accomplishment. She may be a little odd (she’s dating 38 year old Marilyn Manson), she still no doubt deserves a spot on my list.

jennifer_garner.jpg4. Jennifer Garner

Why I like her: Alias, Daredevil, 13 Going On 30

Jennifer Garner is on this list for basically one reason; Alias. I was a huge fan of Alias, and Jennifer Garner was one of the main reasons why. I think she’s a great actress, and one of the few females out there who can pull off action the way she does. She is also pretty funny, as we’ve seen in 13 Going On 30. I’m really looking forward to her upcoming film, “The Kingdom”. It looks excellent.

naomi-watts.jpg3. Naomi Watts

Why I like her: The Ring, 21 Grams, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, King Kong

Although she is incredibly beautiful, Naomi Watts “made it” in acting when she was older than when most attractive women make it in acting. She’s turning 39 this year, and didn’t really hit it big until her role in The Ring in 2002. The main reasons she is on this list, is for her amazing work in 21 Grams, and to a lesser degree, We Don’t Live Here Anymore. Both are incredible films, and Watts’ work is a big reason why.

charlize-theron.jpg2. Charlize Theron

Why I like her: Monster, North Country, The Devil’s Advocate, Cider House Rules, Trapped, Italian Job

Charlize Theron has made a transition that rarely happens. She went from hugely successful model to Academy Award winning actress. Her work in North Country and Monster, are in my opinion, two of the best female performances I have ever seen. She is quite possibly the best actress on the planet right now. She has at least seven films coming out over the next two years, and I am sure I will see all of them.

scarlett_johansson.jpg1. Scarlett Johansson

Why I like her: Lost in Translation, Ghost World, In Good Company, The Island, The Prestige

Anyone that knows me could have guessed who my number one on this list would be. Ever since Lost in Translation I have been practically obsessed with Scarlett Johansson. However, not only do I think she’s the most beautiful actress alive, she is also one of the most talented. She has been around for a long time, having been in films since she was a child. She often chooses artsy roles over blockbusters, and although that’s commendable in a way, I would still like to see her do a few more “popcorn” films (such as The Island).

Honorable mention: Edie Falco, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Bilson, Tricia Helfer, Julianne Moore and Renee Zellweger.

My Top 10 Favorite Actors

April 16, 2007

So far, I think this was the hardest of all my top 10 lists. By hardest, I mean being able to narrow this list down to only 10 names. It could have easily been a Top 25 List. I compiled the list by selecting actors who have I enjoyed for a while, and who have several movies I’ve liked, with not many I haven’t liked.

So, here’s the list:

freeman.jpg10. Morgan Freeman

The Great: Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, Million Dollar Baby

The Good: Unforgiven, Outbreak, Kiss the Girls, Bruce Almighty

The Bad: I didn’t mind them, but Edison and Along Came a Spider were pretty weak.

Morgan Freeman is the kind of actor it’s so hard not to like. He usually plays such likeable characters, and his voice acting alone, in films like “March of the Penguins”, is enough to make you love the guy. I wish he had more lead roles, as he’s often more of a supporting actor. I’d really like to see him play a tortured soul type of character. I think he’d be great in a role like that.

bale.jpg9. Christian Bale

The Great: Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Machinist

The Good: Harsh Times, Reign of Fire

The Bad: None that I have seen yet.

Christian Bale is quickly climbing my list of favorite actors. His past three films (Prestige, Batman Begins and Machinist) have just blown me away.

denzel_washington_002.jpg8. Denzel Washington

The Great: Training Day, He Got Game, Inside Man, John Q

The Good: Philadelphia, Fallen, Remember the Titans, Man on Fire

The Bad: The Manchurian Candidate

Denzel Washington is great at picking top-notch roles. He is rarely in a bad movie, and I can almost guarantee I will enjoy any film he is in, which is quite an accomplishment for any actor.

pacino.jpg7. Al Pacino

The Great: Godfather’s I, II and III, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, Heat

The Good: Any Given Sunday, Carlito’s Way, The Recruit, Two for the Money, Insomnia

The Bad: His appearance in Gigli has to be considered quite the blemish on his resume.

Al Pacino is such an incredible actor, probably the best of his generation. Rarely does an actor of his ability come along, and not many other people can claim the type of superb films that he has starred in.

niccage.jpg6. Nicolas Cage

The Great: Leaving Las Vegas, Con Air, Face/Off, Weather Man, The Rock

The Good: City of Angels, 8MM, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Lord of War

The Bad: Ghost Rider, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (not a bad movie, but pretty boring).

Nicolas Cage doesn’t necessarily get the critical acclaim, although he has won a Best Actor award. He does, however, continually pump out entertaining film after entertaining film. He’s long been one of my all-time faves.

brad_pitt.jpg5. Brad Pitt

The Great: Se7en, Fight Club, Troy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith

The Good: Kalifornia, Twelve Monkeys, Sleepers, A River Runs Throught It, Ocean’s 11

The Bad: Seven Years In Tibet (I found it incredibly boring)

Brad Pitt is another actor with a huge list of incredible movies, and although he does make some odd selections sometimes (Seven Years in Tibet, Meet Joe Black, Legends of the Fall), he is an actor who has such incredible range, with success in nearly every type of role possible.

wahlberg.jpg4. Mark Wahlberg

The Great: The Departed, Boogie Nights, I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings

The Good: Planet of the Apes, Rock Star, Invincible, Four Brothers, The Italian Job

The Bad: The Big Hit, The Truth About Charlie

Mark Wahlberg may be a strange choice for fourth overall on my list, considering the type of actors out there, but I have always been a huge fan of Wahlberg’s. He has been in several movies I have really, really liked, and even the ones that weren’t that great (The Big Hit), I still enjoyed. I’m really looking forward to seeing “Shooter”.

samueljackson.jpg3. Samuel L. Jackson

The Great: Pulp Fiction, 187, Jackie Brown, The Negotiator, Unbreakable

The Good: A Time To Kill, Rules of Engagement, S.W.A.T., Coach Carter

The Bad: XXX, XXX: State of the Union, The Man

Sam Jackson has been in so many of my favorite movies, he was an easy pick for this list. Although he does make some pretty stupid choices (Both XXX’s… come on Sam!), he is one of the coolest actors around, and I will always watch a movie if he’s in it.

norton.jpg2. Edward Norton

The Great: Fight Club, American History X, 25th Hour, Down In The Valley

The Good: Primal Fear, The Score, Rounders, Italian Job

The Bad: Death To Smoochy, Red Dragon. His performances were not bad at all, but the movies themselves were pretty bad.

Edward Norton is an incredibly talented actor. I’d go as far as to say he is the best actor under 40 years old in the world. Not only can he act, but his movies are entertaining as well. Often, the great actors will stick to boring films, but thankfully Norton doesn’t do this. I am greatly looking forward to watching The Illusionist and The Painted Veil, both of which I have not yet seen.

spacey.jpg1. Kevin Spacey

The Great: Usual Suspects, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, The Negotiator, American Beauty

The Good: Outbreak, Glengarry Glenross, Pay It Forward, K-Pax, Life of David Gale

The Bad: Like Morgan Freeman, Spacey also appeared in the straight-to-DVD, “Edison”.

It was a tough choice, but I am listing Kevin Spacey as my favorite actor. He has played some incredible characters and has been in two to three movies that I’d rank among my top 10. It’s his work in American Beauty and the Usual Suspects that just blew me away. Spacey has been doing a lot more stage acting lately, and I hope he returns to film again soon.

Edward Norton to star as ‘The Hulk’

April 16, 2007

edward_norton.jpgEdward Norton has signed-on to play “The Incredible Hulk”, in the remake/re-envisioning of the 2003 bomb, “Hulk”.

“The Incredible Hulk” will be directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter).

The fact that Norton has signed on says a lot about this film. Edward Norton almost always makes great acting choices, and in my opinion, he’s one of the best actors out there.

This move has got me really anticipating this film. The 2003 Ang Lee film was half-decent, but all-in-all, a huge disappointment. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with this movie, as it’s only been 4 years since the previous film was released.

“The Incredible Hulk” is currently scheduled for a 2008 release.

Thanks to john.blog for pointing this story out. You can also read Yahoo’s story, here.

Tom Hanks to return for “Angels & Demons”

April 12, 2007

tomhanks.jpgAccording to Cinema Blend, Tom Hanks has signed on to reprise his role as “Robert Langdon” in the Da Vinci Code prequel, “Angels & Demons”.

It’s the “biggest salary ever paid to an actor in the history of Hollywood.”, says Cinema Blend. I know Hanks wasn’t interested in returning, so the money must have been pretty jaw-dropping in order for him to sign on to the film.

I’m glad to hear they are making this second film, and especially that Hanks is returning. I thought he was the perfect choice for Robert Langdon.

I really enjoyed the books, and even though it was critically panned, I enjoyed the first film as well. Personally, I liked the “Angels & Demons” book even more than the more popular, Da Vinci Code.

Filming is expected to begin in July, which probably means we’ll see a late Summer 2008 release.

My Top 12 Favorite Computer Animated Films

April 11, 2007

I’ve always been a huge fan of CGI (or computer animated) films. Most of them have a great story, amazing animation, vibrant colors, and are usually pretty good movies.

This was a hard list to narrow down to only 12, as it could have easily been a top 20 list.

iceage.jpg12. Ice Age

From imdb.com: Set during the Ice Age, a sabertooth tiger, a sloth, and a wooly mammoth find a lost human infant, and they try to return him to his tribe.

Ice Age was a type of CGI film that we hadn’t seen yet, as most had centered around bug’s or toys. The animation isn’t quite up to par with Pixar, but it was good in it’s own right. The squirrel has to be one of the funniest characters I’ve ever seen. Such a great little side story in the movie.

shrek1.jpg11. Shrek

From imdb.com: An ogre, in order to regain his swamp, travels along with an annoying donkey in order to bring a princess to a scheming lord, wishing himself King.

Being ranked 11th doesn’t sound that great, but almost all of these films would rank in my top 50 all-time list. Shrek was an absolutely hilarious and smart film, and I think it’s as much of a film for adults as it is for kids.

overthehedge.jpg10. Over The Hedge

From imdb.com: A scheming raccoon fools a mismatched family of forest creatures into helping him repay a debt of food, by invading the new suburban sprawl that popped up while they were hibernating…and learns a lesson about family himself.

I really liked Over the Hedge. The voices are great, and one of my favorite scenes involves Steve Carell’s character being on Red Bull. This is a great family film, and although it doesn’t have quite as many adult orientated jokes it in, I still found it very enjoyable.

shrek-2.jpg9. Shrek 2

From imbd.com: Princess Fiona’s parents invite her and Shrek to dinner to celebrate her marriage. If only they knew the newlyweds were both ogres.

Shrek 2 was one of the those rare movie, in where the sequel is better than the original. This was in big part to the new stand-out character, “Puss in boots”. Hilarious film. Looking forward to the new upcoming movie, “Shrek the Third”. I’m not sure if it will be able to out-do this one, though.

cars-dvd.jpg8. Cars

From imdb.com: A hot-shot race-car named Lightning McQueen gets waylaid in Radiator Springs, where he finds the true meaning of friendship and family.

I am a huge fan of Pixar films, and I looked forward to this film in a big, big way. I think it managed to live up to my huge expectations. I’m not a Nascar fan, but I still really enjoyed this movie. It’s a really good story, with a good message behind it as well. Great film for kids and adults.

happyfeetmovie.jpg7. Happy Feet

From imdb.com: Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!

I loved March of the Penguins, but I liked this animated “adaption” just as much. It has a great story, funny and incredibly cute characters, and the animation is amazing. It was rightfully the winner of the best animated film in 2006.

toy_story1.jpg6. Toy Story

From imdb.com: A cowboy toy is profoundly threatened and jealous when a fancy spaceman toy supplants him as top toy in a boy’s room.

For a film that was made twelve years ago, the fact that the animation is almost up to par with movies made today is simply incredible. This was the first ever CGI film that I saw, and it started my love of them. A great story and something, as a young boy, you always wish would come true.

monstersinc.jpg5. Monsters, Inc.

From imdb.com: Monsters generate their city’s power by scaring children, but they are terribly afraid themselves of being contaminated by children, so when one enters Monstropolis, top scarer Sulley find his world disrupted.

Monster’s, Inc. is almost the forgotten Pixar film. It was popular, but not up with there with some of the other gems such as Toy Story or Finding Nemo. I think it should be. It’s an excellent film, in both writing, animation and voice acting.

toy-story-2.jpg4. Toy Story 2

From imdb.com: When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends vow to rescue him, but Woody finds the idea of immortality in a museum tempting.

Another rare achievement, as I found Toy Story 2 to be better than the original. Barely, but I did like it slightly more. The animation improved slightly, and I liked the storyline a little more. Such a great movie, and I can’t believe it’s already 8 years old.

madagascar.jpg3. Madagascar

From imdb.com: Spoiled by their upbringing with no idea what wild life is really like, four animals from New York Central Zoo escape, unwittingly assisted by four absconding penguins, and find themselves in Madagascar, among a bunch of merry lemurs.

Madagascar is the only non-Pixar movie in my top 6. It’s a hilarious film from start to finish, with as much laugh-out-loud moments as any movie I can think of. The penguins are great, Melman was great, and the lemurs were great as well. Such a wonderful film from beginning to end.

incredibles.jpg2. The Incredibles

From imdb.com: A family of undercover superheroes, while trying to live the quiet suburban life, are forced into action to save the world.

Although it is a slight rip-off of the “Fantastic Four” idea, it becomes it’s own film, and does a great job in doing so. I love superhero movies, and I love computer animated films, so the fact that I like this movie is pretty obvious.

finding-nemo.jpg1. Finding Nemo

From imdb.com: A father-son underwater adventure featuring Nemo, a boy clownfish, stolen from his coral reef home. His timid father must then travel to Sydney, and search Sydney Harbour find Nemo.

This is probably the most beautifully colored film I’ve ever seen. The animation is so vibrant and amazing, it’s often used as the sample film to show off big screen TV’s. So yes, it’s a visually appealing film, but that’s not what makes this film great. It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and to be able to pull off funny with a “G” rating is a unique accomplishment. A great story, Finding Nemo is the complete package for not only a CGI film, but any film.

Honerable Mention goes to: Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, The Ant Bully, Open Season, A Bug’s Life, Shark’s Tale and Flushed Away.

My Top 10 Favorite Will Smith Movies

April 9, 2007

I enjoyed doing my Denzel Washington Top 10 List, so I’ve decided to do a Top 10 Favorite Will Smith movies as well. Will hasn’t been in nearly the amount of movies (16 to be exact) as Denzel, but I was still able to put together a top 10 quite easily.

This is going to be a top 9 list though, as I haven’t seen “Pursuit of Happyness” yet, but I know it would get into this top 10. So, assuming Pursuit will be somewhere on the list, here’s the top 9…

shark-tale-dvd.jpg9. Shark Tale

From imdb.com: When a son of a gangster shark boss is accidently killed while on the hunt, his would be prey and his vegetarian brother both decide to use the incident to their own advantage.

Ok, it’s an animated film, but Will did a good job as the voice of the main character, Oscar. It’s a pretty funny movie, as there are a lot of good little pop culture jokes that aren’t just for kids. I liked it a lot, and unfortunately it passed by a lot of people’s radars.

hitch.jpg8. Hitch

From imdb.com: While helping his latest client woo the fine lady of his dreams, a professional “date doctor” (Smith) finds game doesn’t quite work on the gossip columnist (Mendes) with whom he’s smitten.

Thanks to having a late-minute open house at our place, I had to leave and find a couple hours to kill. This was the only movie that hadn’t started yet, so I actually went and saw it by myself. It’s pretty embarrassing going to what is essentially a romance film by yourself. It was me, and about 10 couples in the theater, haha. However, I still enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It has it’s cheesy moments, but overall, it’s a pretty funny movie.

men_in_black.jpg7. Men In Black

From imbd.com: Two men who keep an eye on aliens in New York City must try to save the world after the aliens threaten to blow it up.

I didn’t like this film as much as most people, but I still enjoyed it. It was much, much better than the horrible sequel. Men In Black is a pretty good alien movie parody, with lots of hilarious moments.

bad_boys.jpg6. Bad Boys

From imbd.com: Two hip detectives protect a murder witness while investigating a case of stolen heroin.

Bad Boys is a great buddy-cop film. This was essentially Will’s first big studio role, and it helped launch his career in a big way. He and Martin Lawrence are hilarious in this film, and it’s not only a funny movie, but a great action flick as well.

i_robot_ver3.jpg5. I, Robot

From imdb.com: In the year 2035 a techno-phobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.

It may not have been critically praised, but I think this is one of Will’s most enjoyable films. It’s simply a fun, fun movie to watch. I’ve seen it several times, and it’s been great each time. Like most Will Smith films, it mixes comedy with action very well.

ali.jpg4. Ali

From imdb.com: A biography of sports legend, Muhammad Ali, from his early days to his days in the ring.

Will Smith was absolutely incredible in his portrayal of the great Muhammad Ali. He was well deserving of his Oscar nomination. Ali helped show that Will is not just an action star, but also one of the most gifted actors around.

enemy_of_the_state.jpg3. Enemy of the State

From imdb.com: A lawyer becomes a target by a corrupt politician and his NSA goons when he accidentally receives key evidence to a serious politically motivated crime.

The top three Will Smith films were the hardest to rank. This is more of a thriller than an action film, and the only actual thriller Smith has been in. It ranks pretty high among my favorite movies. I haven’t seen it for quite a few years, but I just bought it and I am looking forward to seeing it again.

independence-day.jpg2. Independence Day

From imdb.com: The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy. Fighting superior technology, Man’s best weapon is the will to survive.

Independence Day is often criticized and a lot of people make fun of it, but I really enjoyed it. It’s an incredibly fun movie. No, it isn’t Oscar-worthy, but you’ll be hard pressed to a more enjoyable film. It’s another in a long line of great action/comedies from Mr. Smith.

badboys2.jpg1. Bad Boys II

From imdb.com: Two loose-cannon narcotics cops investigate the flow of Ecstacy into Florida.

I might get some criticism for ranking Bad Boys II first, as most people would probably say the first film was a better movie. I disagree. Bad Boys II is probably my all-time favorite action/comedy. I just love this film. Such an incredibly fun, enjoyable movie.

My Top 10 Favorite Denzel Washington Movies

April 3, 2007

Denzel Washington has long been one of my favorite actors. Rarely does he make a film that is not enjoyable in some way. Here’s a list of my top 10 favorite Denzel movies:

philidelphia.jpg10. Philidelphia

From imdb.com: When a man with AIDS is fired by a conservative law firm because of his condition, he hires a homophobic small time lawyer as the only willing advocate for a wrongful dismissal suit.

I haven’t seen Philidelphia for years, but I still remember it as a great film. Tom Hanks won the “Best Actor” award for this one, as well. It’s a depressing film, but it’s also one that everyone should see.

hurricane.jpg9. The Hurriance

From imdb.com: The story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder, and the people who aided in his fight to prove his innocence.

I absolutely loved this film when I saw it. I haven’t seen it since that day in the theater, but I still have great memories of it. There were some stories to how true it followed the actual events, but none-the-less it was a great film. Denzel was nominated for Best Actor, although he didn’t win. A great story, and one of the better boxing-related films that I’ve seen.

rememberthetitansdvdcover.jpg8. Remember The Titans

From imdb.com: The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit.

Another in a long line of great Football films, this one ranks near the top of my list. Denzel is excellent in this film. It also starred up-and-comers Ryan Gosling, Kate Bosworth and Kip Pardue, who were all great in their roles.

antwone_fisher_verdvd.jpg7. Antwone Fisher

From imdb.com: Antwone Fisher, a young navy man, is forced to see a psychiatrist after a violent outburst against a fellow crewman. During the course of treatment a painful past is revealed and a new hope begins.

A great drama that also stars the “next” Denzel, Derek Luke. It’s not one of the most well-known Denzel films, but it is one of the better ones. It’s a very powerful film that I definitely recommend if you haven’t seen it yet.

fallen.jpg6. Fallen

From imbd.com: Homicide detective John Hobbes witnesses the execution of serial killer Edgar Reese. Soon after the execution the killings start again, and they are very similar to Reese’s style.

Denzel doesn’t do a lot of supernatural films, so this is a bit of a fresh change from the usual dramatic roles he usually has. After watching this film, the Rolling Stones’ “Time is on my side” will have a whole new meaning to you.

manonfire.jpg5. Man On Fire

From imbd.com: In Mexico City, a former assassin swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Man On Fire was directed by Tony Scott, a guy who’s style I love. It’s a dark action film, and along with Denzel, stars Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken and Marc Anthony.

inside-man-dvd.jpg4. Inside Man

From imdb.com: A cop has to talk down a bank robber after the criminal’s perfect heist spirals into a hostage situation.

The most recently made Denzel film that I’ve seen also stars one of my other favorite actors, Clive Owen. It’s an excellent “heist” film. Although I find Clive Owen outshines Denzel quite a bit in this role, Denzel is still great. One of my favorite films of 2006.

johnq.jpg3. John Q

From imbd.com: A down-on-his luck father, whose insurance won’t cover his son’s heart transplant, takes the hospital’s emergency room hostage until the doctors agree to perform the operation.

John Q has always been one of my favorite movies. It has the perfect mix of drama and suspense, and is an extremely entertaining film from start to finish.

hegotgame.jpg2. He Got Game

From imbd.com: A basketball player’s father must try to convince him to go to a college so he can get a shorter sentence.

He Got Game has been one of my favorite films since the day I first saw it. It’s easily my all-time favorite Basketball film, and the best one ever made in my opinion. Denzel is excellent, and gives such a great performance. It’s a movie a lot of people have forgot about, and if you haven’t seen it, or even haven’t seen it lately, I highly suggest checking it out.

training_day_dvd.jpg1. Training Day

From imdb.com: On his first day on the job as a narcotics officer, a rookie cop works with a rogue detective who isn’t what he appears as.

I love Denzel is “bad guy” roles, and his character in Training Day is one of the “baddest” of all-time. His role as Alonzo in this film is one of my favorite movie bad guys. Denzel is outstanding in Training Day and easily deserved his “Best Actor” award at the 2002 Academy Awards.

300, The Graphic Novel

March 29, 2007

300novel.jpg

I loved the movie 300, so I decided to see how it all came about and picked up Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name.

Like most young boys, I loved comics as a kid. Superheros, art, cool stories… all things kids enjoy. 300 may have originally come out in comic form, but it is so much more than just a simple comic.

I was surprised to see how similar the book and the movie are. I didn’t realize how they pretty much translated the book directly to screen. The camera angles, the writing, and even the look of the characters is almost a dead-on transfer.

300 is a beautiful book. Miller’s art is incredible, and Lynn Varley doesn’t get enough credit for her excellent work in coloring the book. But above all, it’s the writing that makes everything come together. Miller’s writing is so far ahead of anything else I’ve read as far as comics go. All of those great lines in the film? That was all Frank Miller’s doing.

Even if you’re not a fan of comics, I’ll highly suggest picking up this book. It’s probably one of the best comic/graphic novels that I’ve ever read.

Kwik-E-Mart’s opening soon?

March 28, 2007

kwik-e-mart.jpgWell, not quite. But, in lieu of the new Simpsons Movie opening later this year, some 7-11′s could be converting to “Kwik-E-Mart’s” to coincide with the release of the film.

From The Times Dispatch:

“If all goes as planned, the convenience store chain plans to refit 11 stores across the U.S. — Richmond is an unlikely choice — to resemble the front of the Kwik-E-Mart, the convenience store that Homer and other characters frequent in the classic cartoon TV series.

Customers also will be able to buy products inspired by the nearly two-decades-old show, including KrustyO’s cereal, Buzz Cola and iced Squishees (the cup says Squishee, but the contents will be Slurpee).”

That’s actually a pretty cool idea. Too bad they aren’t converting any here in British Columbia.

“The Simpsons Movie” hits theaters July 27, 2007.

My Top 10 Favorite Nicolas Cage Movies

March 22, 2007

Nicolas Cage, although he can sometimes be a bit too dramatic, has always been one of my favorite actors. He seems to always make entertaining movies, and rarely is he in a movie I don’t at least enjoy in some way. I didn’t know if I could put together 10 of his movies that I really liked, but while compiling my list, I realized it could have been a top 15 list quite easily. I was surprised at how many good movies Cage has been in.

Anyways, on with the list…

adaptation1.jpg10. Adaptation

This movie is not for everyone. It’s quite different from most of Cage’s acting choices. It’s a movie you will either love or hate. I thought it had an incredible script, and was a very original film. Cage does an excellent job playing the two completely different characters. Also starring are Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper.

matchstickmen.jpg9. Matchstick Men

This film seemed to pass by most peoples radar, even though it was directed by the great Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma and Louise). It’s a film about a con-artist (Nicolas Cage) and his young protege (Alison Lohman). Lohman is the stand-out in this movie, but Cage also puts in a great performance. An entertaining little movie, I highly recommend if you haven’t seen it.

city-of-angels.jpg8. City of Angels

A film popular among the general public, but not among the critics. I have always really enjoyed this movie. It’s a bit of a chick flick in a way, but it’s still a good movie that most guys can enjoy as well. Cage plays an angel on Earth, while the film also stars Meg Ryan as an ER doctor. This is the perfect movie to see with the girlfriend or wife.

familyman.jpg7. The Family Man

A really great movie that explores what everyone has asked their selves at least once: “what if?” Cage plays a rich investment banker who has everything money can buy and enjoys his life as a single man, but one day wakes up married with kids, working at a tire shop. The film also stars Tea Leoni, Don Cheadle and Jeremy Piven.

gone_in_sixty_seconds.jpg6. Gone In Sixty Seconds

This movie is nothing, if not high-action entertainment. Cage stars as ‘Memphis’ Raines, a retired car thief that comes out of retirement to steal 50 cars in one night in order to save his brother’s life. The film is filled with nice cars, high speed chases and lots of explosions. It’s was never meant to win any awards, but it will entertain you. It also stars Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Scott Caan, Robert Duvall, among others.

weatherman.jpg5. The Weather Man

The Weather Man is somewhat of a dark comedy, and in this one, Cage is David Spritz, a man fighting to decide whether personal and professional success are both possible at the same time. It’s a quirky, enjoyable little film that I highly suggest. Like always, Cage shows he is capable of playing pretty much any role, and able to do it well. It was one of my favorite movies from 2005.

rock_dvd.jpg4. The Rock

These top four were really hard to decide on. The Rock was one of my favorite movies in the mid-90′s. An excellent action film, starring Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris and David Morse. Cage plays a chemist who, along with an ex-con (Connery), must break into the famous Alcatraz prison to stop a group of soldiers from using nerve gas to attack San Fransisco.

lordofwar.jpg3. Lord of War

One of the more recent Nicolas Cage movies that I’ve seen. I was incredibly surprised and impressed with this film. A very interesting look into the world of illegal gun running. Cage is great in his role as a decent man who’s livelihood involves selling firearms to mostly third-world countries. It was not a box office success, but easily one of Cage’s best films. Highly recommended.

faceoff.jpg2. Face/Off

Two of my favorite actors at the time (Cage, along with John Travolta) go head to head in this great action film. The idea is somewhat logically ridiculous, but it’s a fun film none-the-less. Sean Acher goes undercover by changing his appearence (literally switching faces) with a major criminal in order to go undercover and infiltrate his organization. It’s a film that’s over-the-top, yet still great entertainment.

conair.jpg1. Con Air

It may have had the worst action one-liner of all time, but it’s still my all-time favorite Nicolas Cage movie. Like a lot of Cage’s movies in the 90′s, it was made for pure entertainment value, and in that respect, it is a great movie. It does exactly what it put out to do. The cast is great, as John Cusack, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Ving Rhames, Monica Potter and Dave Chappelle all make appearances.

Honerable mention go to: Leaving Las Vegas, National Treasure, 8MM, Snake Eyes, World Trade Center, It Could Happen To You and Windtalkers.

New film for Peter Krause

March 21, 2007

I was a huge “Six Feet Under” fan, and the work of Peter Krause (playing the role of Nate Fisher) was a big reason why. I’m always happy to see my favorite TV stars translate their careers to the big screen. Peter Krause has a new movie coming out this year, called “Civic Duty”.

civic_duty.jpg

IMDB.com’s plot outline:

An American accountant bombarded with cable news and the media’s obsession with terrorist plots in the post 9-11 world, receives a jolt when an unattached Islamic graduate student moves in next door.

The movie is being described as a “thriller with a lot of twists”. Also of note, the movie was filmed in Vancouver, BC.

The Top 10 Movies I’m looking forward to in ’07

March 19, 2007

Here are the top 10 movies that I’m looking forward to for this year. 300 would have been number 2 on the list, but since it’s already out, I won’t include it.

bourneultimatum.jpg10. The Bourne Ultimatum

Release Date: August 3, 2007

This is the third film in the series about Jason Bourne, based on the novels written by Robert Ludlum. If it’s anything like the first two thrillers, it should be an entertaining movie.

evanalmighty.jpg9. Evan Almighty

Release Date: June 22, 2007

This is the sequel/spin-off of the 2003 film Bruce Almighty. Steve Carrell plays Evan, the next unlikely candidate to be handed God’s powers. You may remember his character as the bumbling news anchor that Bruce used his powers against in the original.

fantastic_four_rise_of_the_silver_surfer_xlg.jpg8. The Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Release Date: June 15, 2007

The sequel to 2005 film; this one will feature popular marvel comics’ character, “The Silver Surfer”. I really enjoyed the first movie, although it was somewhat of a box office disappointment. I think you’ll see a difference with the sequel, as it looks to have a better storyline.

ratatouille.jpg7. Ratatouille

Release Date: June 29, 2007

Ratatouille is the next in the line of great Pixar films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. I’ve seen the trailer, and although it looks alright, it didn’t excite me quite as much as the usual Pixar releases. Pixar has yet to let me down, however, so I am still expecting big things from this movie as well.

simpsons_movie.jpg6. The Simpsons Movie

Release Date: July 27, 2007

I’ve always been a pretty big “Simpsons” fan, even though I haven’t watched the show much over the past few years. After a long, long, long wait, we will finally be treated to a big screen version of the show. With so many years of waiting behind this, it’s going to be hard to live up to the expectations of the fans. I hope it does, and I think it will.

oceans_thirteen.jpg5. Ocean’s 13

Release Date: June 8, 2007

This summer could also be called the year of the sequels. Ocean’s 13 is the third film about Danny Ocean and his team of bank robbers. The usual superstar cast will once again include George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon among others. New to the cast this year is Al Pacino.

shrek3.jpg4. Shrek The Third

Release Date: May 18, 2007

Shrek and Fiona are at it again, and this time they must try their hand at being King and Queen. I’ve seen the trailer, and it looks like it’ll be another hilarious film. Thankfully Puss n’ Boots will return, as will the rest of the characters from Shrek 2. Justin Timberlake joins the voice cast that already includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy.

deathproof.jpg3. Grindhouse

Release Date: April 6

Longtime friends, and super directors, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez join forces to pay homage to their childhood obsession, “grindhouse” films. Grindhouse features two movies in-one. First, Rodriguez’s film “Planet Terror”, and then Tarantino’s “Death Proof”. Judging by the trailers, it looks like Planet Terror will be the better film, but I never underestimate Tarantino.

spider_man_three_ver5.jpg2. Spiderman 3

Release Date: May 4, 2007

The fourth film on my top ten to be film #3 in a series. I am more excited for this film than either of the previous Spiderman films, as it features one of my all-time favorite comic book villans, “Venom”. Spiderman is probably the biggest comic franchise of all time, and I think this film will out-gross both of the previous films. It will probably give a good push at being the highest grossing film of the summer.

transformers-the-movie-poster1.jpg1. Transformers

Release Date: July 4, 2007

A movie that I have been waiting for for 20 years, it easily makes the top of my list. I’ve made enough mention of the film in previous posts, but to summarize, it focuses on two groups of robots that come to earth and wage war against each other, placing mankind in the middle. It should be a special effects blockbuster, and could make a push to be the highest grossing film of the summer.

5 Movies that everyone has seen but me

March 19, 2007

Anyone who knows me or reads this site knows that I like to see a movie every now and then (hell, my last four posts, including this one, are about movies). I estimate that I’ve seen somewhere in the range of 1,500 movies, probably even more.

However, there are always some that slip by. There’s actually a few movies that it seems everyone but me has seen. How I’ve managed to go this long without seeing them, I really don’t know. Sometimes it’s out of principle, in some cases it’s been lack of interest, and in others… well, everyone has seen it and has no interest in watching it with me.

Here are five movies I surprisingly haven’t seen:

exorcist_dvd_large.jpg5. The Exorcist

The Exorcist is possibly the most popular horror movie of all time. It is practically a tradition for every 13 year old to see. Somehow I missed out on this tradition. It was probably due to my lack of interest in horror movies. I doubt I will ever see it, as I still have no interest in the film. Horror movies have been duplicated over and over, and I doubt I’ll see anything from this movie that I haven’t already seen in other films.

schindlers.jpg4. Schindler’s List

I do one day plan on seeing this movie. I believe I currently have it on my ziplist. I just haven’t got around to it. I was too young to be interested in this type of film when it originally came out, and I guess since I’ve been of age to appreciate a film like this, I just haven’t been in the mood to see a black and white film about the holocaust. It’s a film everyone should probably watch, and at some point I know I will.

indianajones.jpg3. The Indiana Jones Trilogy

Not only have I missed out seeing on one of the Indiana Jones movies, but I’ve missed out on all three. It’ll soon be four, as the next movie has just been announced. I actually own the trilogy and at some point in the near future I will make a day out of it, and see them all. I definitely plan on doing this before the 4th installment is released.

grease.jpg2. Grease

There may be a few other guys out there who haven’t seen this movie, but Grease seems to be a film that every single female on the planet has watched, and usually more than once. I don’t really have any interest or intent on watching Grease, and unless I get forced into it by my girlfriend, I doubt I ever will. I do like John Travolta though, so who knows…

titanic-poster02.jpg1. Titanic

Yes, that little film Titanic. It’s only the highest grossing movie of all time, coming in at a mere $600 million dollars in North America alone. And yes, a huge movie fan like myself hasn’t seen what could officially be called the “most popular movie of all time”. It’s almost embarrassing… almost. I still feel I’ve seen it though… I mean, I know about Kate Winslet being naked, the big ship hitting an iceberg and sinking, Leonardo being the “king of the world” and so on. One day I’ll see it… just not sure when.

Just as good the second time around

March 19, 2007

300.jpg

Last night I did something I’ve never done before. I went and saw a movie in the theater for a second time. Jason and I hit up “300″. It was his first time seeing it, however. For me, the movie was just as awesome the second time around.

I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD (or, hopefully HD-DVD) and I can watch it at will in the comfort of my lay-z-boy.

My Top 12 Favorite Childhood Movies

March 15, 2007

I’ve enjoyed movies for as long as I can remember, and I can still recall the movies I loved as a kid. I’ve probably forgotten about some over the years, but in reverse order, here are my top 12 favorite childhood movies:

indiansummer.jpgNUMBER 12: Indian Summer

“Indian Summer” was a movie about eight friends that reunite for a week-long reunion at a summer camp they used to attend as children. The friend’s are all now in their 30′s, and it’s a movie about rediscovering your youth and going back to a time when you were at your happiest. I don’t have a lot of specific memories about this movie, other than me and Vanessa loved it as kids. I’d like to see it again, as it’s been probably 12 years since I last saw it.

weekendatbernies.jpgNUMBER 11: Weekend at Bernie’s

Two dumb young losers happen to find their boss has been shot and killed, and in order to avoid becoming suspects they come up with the great idea of simply pretending he is still alive. They drag his dead body around with them everywhere, continually getting into comical situations. The man who originally tried to kill Bernie, now thinks he’s still alive so he is now chasing the boys everywhere attempting to kill Bernie for good. It’s one of those great cheesy 80′s comedies anyone who saw it as a kid will always have fond memories of.

dropdeadfreddvd.jpgNUMBER 10: Drop Dead Fred

Drop Dead Fred, a movie about a girl who’s annoying childhood imaginary friend returns and won’t go away, is a movie I loved as a kid. This is probably a movie, if I were to watch it again, I would hate. It sounds like an awful movie, but it’s the kind of thing a 10 year old boy loves. I remember it being hilarious, especially the character of Fred. I probably rented this movie 15 times when I was a boy.

gijoe.jpgNUMBER 9: G.I. Joe: The Movie

G.I. Joe was always the “other show” in comparison to The Transformers, but I still enjoyed it. I don’t remember watching the TV much as a kid, finding the US military story lines too boring. The movie, however, was awesome. Instead of fighting the usual terrorists, G.I. Joe was up against some mutant underground alien super villains. How this had anything to do with the story of the TV show, I have no idea. I loved the movie, and I can still remember how pissed off I was when someone taped over my copy with a stupid Care Bears episode.

3ninjas.jpgNUMBER 8: Three Ninjas

It’s funny how movies so horrible can be loved by kids. I don’t want to see this movie again, as it will no-doubt ruin my memories of it, but as a kid this was the coolest movie to me. What 10 year old boy doesn’t want to be a ninja? The movie is about three kids, with cool nick names like “Rocky”, “Colt” and “Tum Tum” (okay, maybe not Tum Tum), who are taught the ninja ways by their Grandfather. They are kidnapped by an enemy of their Father’s, who is unaware of their ninja skills. Hilarious ninja gags and hi-jinx ensue.

ninjaturtlesmovie.jpgNUMBER 7: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Everyone born between 1975 and 1995 has seen this movie, so there’s no need to describe what it’s about. The Ninja Turtles were one of the most popular cartoons of the 80′s and 90′s and this movie was a no-brainer. It was actually a pretty decent movie, and the 80′s feel to it is excellent. I watched it about a year ago, and it is really funny to see what was cool back in 1990. It was actually still an entertaining movie, and was, like most originals, much better than the following two sequels.

greatoutdoors.jpgNUMBER 6: The Great Outdoors

John Candy was the comedian of the late 80′s and early 90′s. I loved all of his movies, but The Great Outdoors was one of my favorites. This was one of those “relaxing vacation goes horribly wrong” type of movies, and probably one of the first in it’s genre. It’s an excellent movie, and I think one of the funniest things I had ever seen as a kid was when the bear got shot in the ass. Absolutely hilarious!

homealone.jpgNUMBER 5: Home Alone

Home Alone was the movie that made Macaulay Culkin a star, and for good reason. He is great in this movie, and in the sequel as well. This is another great “smart kid plays gags on stupid criminals” movie. Probably the best of it’s kind, however. I’m sure I watched this movie at least 20-30 times as a kid, and enjoyed it each and every time. It’s one of those timeless movies that will always be enjoyable.

coolrunnings.jpgNUMBER 4: Cool Runnings

Cool Runnings is another great John Candy movie. The film is based on a true story about the first ever Jamaican bobsled team to make it to the Winter Olympics. My Dad was just in Jamaica, and apparently it is still quite a popular movie over there. When I originally saw Cool Runnings, I remember thinking it was the funniest movie I had ever seen. I haven’t seen it for at least ten years, but it seems to me that it would be the kind of movie that would still be great even now.

lion-king-dvd3.jpgNUMBER 3: The Lion King

In my mind, “The Lion King” is the best Disney movie of all time. Even now, I can watch it and enjoy it. I was 12 when it came out, and even though I thought I was getting too old for cartoons, and didn’t want to admit, I still liked the Lion King a lot. At the time, the animation seemed far and above any 2D film I had seen before. The story is excellent, and like Disney has done several times, they created a classic with the Lion King.

landbeforetime.jpgNUMBER 2: The Land Before Time

Every child has a “dinosaur” phase, and I was lucky enough for mine to happen right when The Land Before Time was released. If my memory serves me right, this was the first ever movie I saw in a theatre. It’s an excellent film. The characters are great, the story is great, and even the animation was pretty good for the time it was made. It’s unfortunate the movie’s reputation has been tarnished thanks to it’s 472 sequels, but the original is still one of the greatest memories of my childhood.

the_transformers_dvd.jpgNUMBER 1: Transformers: The Movie

Anyone who knows me or has read my blog before could have easily guessed which movie would be ranked number 1. Transformers was the staple of my childhood, and most of my best memories somehow involve them. This movie is the only film on this list that still ranks among my favorite movies, and it probably always will, based on it’s pure nostalgic value.

“Transformers” ain’t for kids this time around

March 14, 2007

transformers-the-movie-poster.jpgEver since I first heard about it’s potential release, I’ve been, to say the least, excited about the upcoming live-action Transformers movie. Most of you know my huge obsession with those wonderful little transforming robots, so being pumped for this movie is a no-brainer.

I first heard the movie was a go about 2 years ago, and it will finally be released on July 4th, 2007. Everyone who wasn’t a fan views Transformers as a kid’s thing; a silly show made to sell toys. Well, the movie will be nothing like that.

It’s directed by Michael Bay. The same Michael Bay that directed Bad Boys 1 & 2, Pearl Harbor, Armageddon, The Island, The Rock, etc. The movie is also being produced by Steven Spieldberg. Needless to say, this isn’t a low-budget film. It’s also being released on the day of the year usually set aside for the year’s biggest blockbuster films, July 4th.

The movie has now been completed and was just recently sent to the MPAA to receive it’s rating. They replied by giving the first cut of the film an “R” rating. Because R-rated movies cut-back on the amount of potential viewers, most studios generally try to stay away from receiving one. Director Bay, not wanting to change anything with his film, went to Spielberg for help in attaining a better rating. His influence worked, and without changing anything in the movie, the film has ended up with a PG-13 rating.

I’m happy to hear they are making a more serious, adult-orientated action movie. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve see how this is going to be one hell of an action film.

Only 4 months to go…
