Movie Review: Casino Royale

May 10, 2007

casino_royale.jpgI have never been a very big ‘James Bond’ fan. I’ll be honest and say that I have only seen the Pierce Brosnan versions. They were pretty much as “popcorn film” as you can get. They were alright, but nothing special to me.

I have no interest in seeing the older James Bond films either. For being such a movie buff, this probably pretty surprising, but they just don’t interest me.

But Casino Royale has completely changed my opinion of James Bond. If every James Bond was like this, I would watch them again and again. This is how the series should have been done for a while.

Daniel Craig (who I already loved thanks to his work in Layer Cake), was excellent as Bond. He’s a great actor, and I was pretty impressed with his action work. I had only seen him in dramas prior to this film. That opening sequence is pretty incredible. It had SpiderMan-like action scenes and was a great way to start off the film.

The movie was longer than I expected, and it didn’t necessarily drag out, but I kept thinking it was about to end, then another sequence came along. I did like how you learn a lot about how Bond became Bond. You see how he becomes the womanizer and cold-hearted guy that he is in the later films.

For the first time, I’m looking forward to the next Bond film. If it is anything like this one, I will definitely try and check it out in the theater rather than wait for the DVD.

My Rating: 8/10

  1. Man I loved this movie! It was a little over excessive in the end, but I absolutely loved the fact that we got to see James get his ass kicked and STILL come out on top. I think this is the first Bond movie I’ve seen where he’s actually physically vunerable and I really liked that. Plus Daniel Craig is Mega Hawt!

I always wondered why Bond hadn’t died of an STD by now.

  2. Really he should have multiple STD’s, lung cancer and liver disease. (Not to mention how many AK-47 rounds should have hit him by now. What I found weird, was this being the 30th film or whatever and its the beginning of his story. Sort of a Batman Begins for Bond. I also loved it!

  3. The famous British agent has been trained to detect a woman with STD. Duh. He has a gadget in his pants or something. “Casino Royale” surprised me too because it was so different from the others. Craig gives Bond a much needed weight.

  4. Dude, you’re missing out on some great films. Try “From Russia with Love”, “Goldfinger” and “Live and Let Die”. For best results, watch them with some hard core Bond fans like Jef and myself…
